AWL Mentoring Circles Program

AWL is excited to continue its Mentoring Circles Program for another year, which is available to women lawyers in Calgary of all years of call and practice status. Participants may be practicing, non-practicing, or retired members of the Law Society of Alberta. This Mentoring Circles Program is unique in its format, focus and participants in Alberta. AWL believes mentoring relationships are an important way for women lawyers to provide and receive support to and from other women in the profession to enhance their own careers and personal and professional lives. Many women lawyers may not have access to or may not want to discuss certain topics at their workplace. The Program provides a confidential and comfortable environment to discuss issues.

Expectations

  • Open, honest, non-judgmental communication
  • Strictly confidential
  • Commitment to attend all or most of the 6 sessions
  • The sessions are designed for professional and personal development
  • The sessions are not designed to seek or give substantive legal advice
  • The sessions are not counseling sessions and participants should seek independent medical assistance for mental health and / or other health related issues

Format
The Mentoring Circles Program will be organized in a mentoring “circles” format, consisting of approximately 6-8 women per “circle” at various levels of seniority. This format will provide for both upwards and downwards mentoring amongst participants. The circles will meet 6 times throughout the year as follows:

September 28, 2016
October 19, 2016
November 23, 2016
January 18, 2016
February 22, 2016
April 26, 2016

Participants will remain in the same circle for all 6 sessions. Each session will focus on a different topic relevant to women lawyers. Lawyers who wish to establish a 1 to 1 mentoring relationship with someone they connect with at the Mentoring Circles Program are encouraged to do so.

The topics of this year’s sessions may include:
1. A Day in the Life: Part 1 – Practicing Outside of the Traditional Law Firm
2. A Day in the Life: Part 2 – Leveraging Your Legal Training to Build Alternative Careers
3. Avoiding Burnout
4. Celebrating Failure
5. Media Relations – Using Traditional and Social Media to Your Advantage
6. It Happens to Everyone – Ethical Dilemmas in the Legal Profession
